A FANCY STORAGE BENCH

I only got so far with this bench before I had to put it on hold. The tea house fabric I wanted was out
of stock and would take 4 - 6 weeks before I could get my hands on. It is an extra heavy upholstery
fabric and looks so good with white distressed furniture. Well it finally arrived and the bench got
finished. The drawer fronts are all decorative but there is a hinged lid with tons of open storage
inside. It is Canadian made in Quebec and comes with a key and lock.

This bench was painted with ASCP Pure white and Old white. The original finished had a heavy
graining and I took advantage of it with the distressing. I used a 220 grit sand paper and made sure
to also sand all the edges.

Hope this inspires you!

THE TALE OF A SINGLE NIGHTSTAND bedside table makeover

I had been relegated to the corner
of my owners yard sale, like a child on a time-out.

No one looked at me, no one would talk to me.
Why should they I only had one drawer knob,
paint was falling off me, my drawers wouldnt even
open. I was beyond chic, I was just shabby.

From my corner view I saw the nice couple drive
in. After looking around they bought a few of my
friends. One at a time the nice man would pay my
owner and then tuck each of them gently in their
car. I then began to pout. There I was hiding in the
corner with all hope running out.
All of a sudden the nice lady looked my way.
Would she fork out the money and pay?
I got so excited!
She crossed the yard and started inspecting me,
she even turned me upside down to see.

Soon I was on my way to a new home.
She didnt think I was an ugly garden gnome!
.......
First, she came at me with a screw driver,
prying at my drawer.
I wasnt gonna give up that easy.
This was gonna be a chore.
Then came a pry bar and a hammer,
I thought this is really gonna hurt.
She got all my drawers open
with a lot of hard work,
So rather then a home for mice
I really started to feel rather nice.
Then I got some new paint,
my drawers were lined,
and I even got a new shine.
My drawers got new jewelry,
Shes not playing no tom foolery!

I live happily ever after
with a nice lady they found
where I now live in her home town.

THE END

GEORGE TOLD ME I WAS HOT LAST NIGHT slipper chair n ottoman

I started writing this post several days ago
just as something was hitting me and hitting me hard,
which Ill explain at the end.

I completed this slipper chair with the help of
my sister awhile back, that post can be seen here.

The purchasers of this chair also requested a matching ottoman.
Taya and Matt are a lovely young couple and repeat customers.
I had the matching fabric and a couple of useful pieces waiting for redo.
The question would be ... would one of them work?

Attempt one, was too small,

Attempt two, was too tall,

Attempt three, was just right.

If you look closely you might realize this ottoman was made from
the only salvageable part of another arm chair, with great legs.

Ive been MIA for the last few days due to a case of severe strep
throat. If you have ever been afflicted with this condition I now
understand and sympathize. I couldnt talk, eat, swallow, and the
worst part for me was not thinking straight due to a high fever for
36hrs straight. After a midnight visit to the hospital and high doses
of medication, the doc says it will take a few more days till I
started to feel normal again and Im still having trouble eating and
drinking but Im definitely back, with a funny sounding voice.

Cherry Blossoms on a MCM

Ive had quite a few people inquire if I was going to be doing anymore cherry blossoms
on a dresser. The last one I did was awhile back:
This one was done on a vintage tallboy.....see the process HERE
And the second time was for a customer request on a vintage maple chest.....

So I decided to switch it up a bit and try the stenciling on this mid-century dresser.
I thought this would make a great changing table in a nursery.
I had planned on redoing the wood. However, upon closer inspection (which you cannot
see in the photos) the veneer on this piece was not in the best shape. It had a very
high-gloss top coat. While I was attempting to strip that off, it became apparent the existing
wood veneer had a lot of chips and divots.  I filled them in with filler and did quite a bit
of sanding to make the top and drawer fronts smooth and filled in.

Lining up the stencils and trying to make the branches flow.....

I used my own mixture for the yellow chalk paint.
Even tho this was a stencil, I spent a lot of time going over each individual blossom, painting and shading, to give it a little more realistic look.

Many, Many hours later..........fineto!

Scratching Myself To Distraction

One thing I like very much about my mostly hand tool approach to woodworking is how it is mostly jig free. I have a dislike for gadgets and I would rather spend my time making progress on the piece than making a tool or a holder for a tool. That aversion had lead me to put building several things I would probably like very much to have. A good bow saw for one, a scratch stock for another. To make the progress I wanted on this build I had to upgrade something.

Im working my way through a build of the School Box from the book "The Joiner and Cabinet Maker" If you want to catch up on what Ive done so far you can see all the post collected together HERE. (Fair warning theyre in reverse chronological order with the newest at the top so keep scrolling down and see the build work its way backwards to rough stock.)

I needed a couple of scratch stocks. I wanted to make a little bead detail on the mouldings to wrap around the base and lid of the box. They are simple little tools to make and Ive had them on my "Gosh I should make one or two of those" list for a while. Apparently the time had come.

Id picked up a saw at the home center on clearance for a dollar a while ago. I never intended to actually saw with it, the intention was to use the blade steel for something like this. I also had a section of hickory in the off cut pile.

The hickory had a nice knot in the middle of it so what I thought might be three of a kind turned into a pair. Ive never been good at poker anyway.

I got them sawed down to size and took them over to the band saw to get them roughed into their "L" shapes.

Then I spent a few minutes with the rasp to smooth out the saw marks from the band saw and to give a little ease to all the edges.

I marked up the saw blade with a square and a sharpie. I chose to make strips the same width as the blade of the tri-square. I used a cutting blade on my angle grinder to cut them up. Sorry no pics of the sparks flying.

I dont have a great picture of it but the steel blade fits in a thin saw kerf that runs up the thin area. You place a screw at the most distal end of the arm to pinch the kerf together and hold the blade in place.

But I wasnt getting off the jig and appliance train just yet. Papa needed just one more fix. The mouldings I was working with were narrow, about 1 3/8ths inch wide and that makes work holding more difficult. So I decided to make a moulding shooting board like the one I saw used in Mathew Bickfords book "Mouldings in Practice"

Its a simple thing. I decided to make mine two sided out of a section of pine 1x6 I had sitting around. I cut the board to four foot, I kept half for the bed and ripped a strip off the other section to attach to the top. Its not as fussy to make as an end grain shooting board where you really want to make the fence square. In a moment of decision I decided to make this one two sided, one side narrow and one wider to support different kinds of stock.

A little glue and a couple screws set the fence in place. Then you countersink a couple screws in the ends of the bed that you can raise and lower to act as a stop for the stock youre planing. In use I butted the jig up against a bench dog and held it down with a hold fast.

After using it for a bit I decided to add screw stops to both sides. It makes it easier to work on both sides of the moulding and work with the grain.

For the bottom mouldings I chamfered the top and ran a bead around the bottom edge. The scratch stock worked pretty well for the first time out of the gate.

I dovetailed and wrapped the mouldings around the box. A little hide glue and a couple nails and they were attached.

And I have to say I really liked the way they turned out. The bead and the chamfer are subtle. The single dovetail is strong, and not out of place and the black walnut I made the mouldings from is a nice, framing contrast to the wild grain of the curly red oak.
