Building a credenza

A credenza is a sort of low cabinet that was popular in the 1950s. I am not entirely sure what its main purpose was, but I remember my grandparents had one in which they stored records. They must have used it for something else too, but I was very little and I just recall the LPs.

Mid-century Modern

My grandparents would have been amused by is the fact that "Mid-century Modern" furniture is quite popular now and very expensive. I have seen ads online for a company that specializes in 50s style furniture and a new credenza (not an antique) sells for upwards of $7000.

I love the look of furniture from this period. It was experimental, yet practical. It seemed to look forward to the space-age, yet was grounded in simple, Shaker lines.

When I was researching my design, I was struck by the heavy squareness of these pieces and the unadorned, spindly legs that almost look too delicate to hold the weight of the cabinet.

A credenza for 2013: Early 21st Century Retro-Modern

I think one of the reasons these cabinets are popular today is that they are the perfect height for televisions, which should be viewed at eye-level from where you are sitting. Not to mention credenzas come equipped with storage perfect for stereo and home-theater components. Plus, there is just something cool about setting a large LCD TV on such a retro-looking piece of furniture.

I made mine with two doors and an open section. The doors can slide to any position, always leaving one third of the case visible. On the back Ive included large cut-outs for electrical cords and such. I used two sheets of 3/4" cherry plywood and a half sheet of 1/4" plywood. The trim and legs are made with solid cherry. If you wanted to save money, you could use pine plywood and you can buy 6" legs very inexpensively if you havent a lathe.

Shed Design Plan Preparation for Building a Shed

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Don_Koenig]Don Koenig
Many people consider building a backyard storage shed to be a minor project. It is more complex than building a table or stool and far less complicated than building an addition to your home but, no matter how easy or difficult the project may be it still requires a competent shed design plan to do the job right. There are a few essentials you need when you decide to build a storage shed in your backyard.
Motivation
The first thing to consider when deciding to undertake a small scale construction project like shed building is the motivation for building the structure in the first place. What needs storing that you cannot easily put in your garage, basement or attic? Will the shed help you organize the mess or will it just become another black hole for unwanted material possessions? Understanding your motivation for building is but the first step in the process.
Another thing to consider is how motivated your family is to helping you conceive of and complete the project. While much of the actual construction can be accomplished with your own two hands, an extra set of hands or two will come in quite handy. Is this a family project or a true do-it-yourself adventure?
Finally, are you motivated to build your shed from scratch or do you think youll be better off simply assembling a shed kit you buy at your local home center. Building from scratch will save you a good deal of money but there are some basic skills required to do the job right. If you dont have a complete set of directions, especially for the detailed parts of the work required, youll have a harder time building from scratch.
The Required Tools
I cannot emphasize this point enough, the most important tool you possess when building a shed (or anything else for that matter) is a shed design plan. Plans come in all shapes and sizes, contain enough detail to do the job or merely skim over the details assuming a professionals knowledge of the task at hand and contain detailed material lists or no material list at all. I always recommend that you buy plans that contain the greatest level of detail, from blow-up drawings of fine details to a complete set of instructions and lists of materials needed to do the job with few problems. Plans are available that meet these requirements online at quite affordable prices. Whatever you do, dont skimp on this requirement.
Youll need a saw, a hammer, wrenches, screw-drivers and pliers as well as a rule for measuring. If you dont have any tools you can rent power saws but I suggest that you purchase hand tools that accommodate to the home woodworker. They are not expensive and will be there later if you need them.
In addition to the hand tools mentioned above, you may need a plumb line, chalk line, level and a carpenters square. Dont forget to protect your eyes with goggles.
Youll need a post-hole digger to assure that your shed has a solid foundation. Motorized post-hole diggers can be rented by the hour and manual post-hole diggers are inexpensive to buy. I strongly recommend that you dig your foundation holes mechanically rather than by hand because by hand it is a back breaking job.
Dont overlook paint or stain for the exterior of your shed. Youll also need paint rollers, buckets, brushes and extension poles to do the job right.
One more point, dont buy the cheapest materials you can buy. Using quality material may cost a bit more up-front but they will save you a bundle over the long-haul in repairs.
While this should go without saying, do not proceed without a proper shed design plan. If you do, youll be screaming bloody murder before you are half-way through.

Christmas Sneak Peek

Im in the middle of decorating for local Christmas Tours and dont want to share too much here just yet but couldnt resist sharing a little....

My hubby brought home this little cedar tree and I thought it would be perfect for this empty space in the kitchen.  I simply adorned it with some of the wood gift tags I made.

And as you can see, Im a jar person.  I love decanting all my dry goods into pretty vintage jars.  The more the merrier.  :)

The two vintage paintings I actually found in a dumpster.  I was so drawn to them so I snatched them up and gave them a home in my kitchen.

I was so excited to decorate the dining room this year.

The chippy red bench was also found by my hubby and I thought it was perfect for Christmas and our home in its less than perfect condition.  (Sorry for the sun glaring in the photo)

I love using things from nature to decorate so these walnut tree stumps definitely got to come inside for the season.  I sanded them a little and sprayed them with a clear gloss.

And heres a little peak at our stairs.  I usually never share them because I dont like the staircase.  I dream of having a beautiful stair rail but for now, we dont.  I was inspired by Carlas stair project last year so I did my own version this year with one of my dads favorite Christmas songs.

Thats it for now!  Ill share more soon!

Take care!

George middleisland

Despite the fact that this artist has been written about for the blog multiple times I would still like to write about George Nakashima. He started as an architect and ended up a furniture maker after studying under Gentaro Hikogawa while inturend by the government. Nakashima’s woodworking can be identified by its rough natural edges and Japanese joinery. I am impressed by the care taken with every step of crafting the furniture from picking the tree, to the years of drying, to the choosing of the boards. His approach to woodworking is a spiritual one like the tea ceremony and calligraphy attention is paid to every step to complete the task. His natural and simplistic style is elegant and attractive.

This is an example of his famous coniod chair where the beauty is in the sincerity of the wood.

David P. from Kansas City went through a lot of research and development to build this pool table. It flips over when not in use and becomes a dining table! I dont think Ive ever seen anything like this before. David got Best in Show at his high school for this woodworking project. Hes a Junior. Wow...thats ambitious.

Bruce in Rossmoor decided to try his hand making his first bandsaw box. One thing led to another, and he ended up making a nesting set. Perfect, because while making it, he realized it looked like a bird. Adding the eye, was inspired. First box? Wow...more ambitious woodworking! Thanks guys.

Rolling Pins

Hey there!  How was your weekend?  I finally finished my rolling pin project that was inspired by the collection of rolling pins we picked up while thrifting last weekend.  I am so happy with it!!  Dont you love an unexpected project that happens because of something you found that you werent looking for?  Does that even make sense?  Anyway.....
I used what I had on hand, which was barn wood, for the back, attached them to the wall with a nail gun and then, with a table saw, ripped a few strips off another plank to use for the top and bottom trim.  For the pegs, I used oil rubbed bronze door stops from Lowes.
(Sorry for the blurry photo.)  These only cost $1.88 each and were easy to do because they just screwed right into the wood.  I didnt like the white tip so I spray painted it with Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint to match the rest of it.
And since I love jute twine and use it for everything, I wrapped some around one of the rolling pins to make a nifty dispenser and add another layer of texture.
I seriously would love to do my whole kitchen in barn wood.  I considered using it for our backsplash before I decided on beadboard, but it was going to be a little tricky with pulling electrical outlets forward to accommodate the thickness of the wood.  Im super scared of electrical outlets and wont mess with them.
Its right at home above our vintage spice cabinet.  I actually sat in here and stared at it for an hour after I was done.  It made me so happy!  What do you think?
Happy happy Monday!  Enjoy your day!
